It's a little-known fact that the Utrecht armchair was never intended for luxury consumption. Tasked by the Metz & Co. department store in 1935 to design a serial production piece, Gerrit Rietveld quickly realised his creation was too unique and comfortable to part with. Now, the sculptural, angular design is an icon of both the Neoplastic movement and Rietveld’s experimental vision: see it brought to life here through Cassina's expert craftsmanship.
